MPEG-4 standard se sastoji od slijedećih dijelova:
 
# Sistemski - opisuje sinkronizaciju i multipleksiranje videa i audia.
 
# Video – određuje kodne alate pridružene vizualnim objektima prirodnog i sintetičkog porijekla.
# Audio – skup formata za kompresiju za perciptivno kodiranje audio signala, uključujući i neke varijacije AAC kao i drugih audio kodova i alata.
# Prilagođeno ispitivanje - opisuje postupke za ispitivanje usklađenosti s ostalim dijelovima norme.
# Referentni softver – pruža referentni softver za dokazivanje i objašnjavanje ostalih dijelova standarda.
