Krešimir Dolenčić
 
Born in 1962 in Zagreb. Graduated from Classics Programme Secondary School in Zagreb and studied piano at “Pavao Markovac” Secondary School of Music. In 1988 graduated from the Academy of Dramatic Arts.
Together with a few other fellow actors in the first year of the Academy of Dramatic Arts, I founded the theatre company called LIFT .We toured numerous cities and festivals and won several significant awards (“Golden Smile” and “Gavella’s evenings Acknowledgement”…)
After completing my studies, I directed in many theatres throughout Croatia such as the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb, Split and Rijeka, Gavella, ITD, ZKM and Komedija, Dubrovnik Summer Festival, Split Summer Festival, Rijeka Summer Nights. My shows visited all Croatian festivals, as well as some festivals abroad. So far I have directed more than 40 drama productions based on plays by Pinter, Držić, Kolar, Galin, Shakespeare, Giradoux, Iljf and Petrov, Vidić, Wilde, Machiavelli, Ana Tonković Dolenčić, Bertold Brecht, Moliere, Verne, Gogol, Poiret, Goldoni, Pirandello, Voltaire, Feydau, and others.
As a Fulbright scholar, I taught acting to students of singing and graduate students at Rice University in Houston, after which I was invited to teach at the Trinity College of Music in London.
I directed 45 opera premières by Verdi (Rigoletto, Aida…), Puccini (Il Trittico, Madame Butterfly), Mozart (Cosi fan tutte, Magic Flute), Offenbach (The Tales of Hoffmann ), Stravinsky (Oedipus Rex), Purcell (Indian Queen, Dioclesian), Poulenc (Dialogues of the Carmelites), Debussy (Peleas et Melisande), Donizetti (Lucia di Lammermoore, The Daughter of the Regiment, The Elixir of Love), Gotovac (Ero the Joker several times), Zajc (Nikola Šubić Zrinjski several times), Saint Saëns (Samson and Delilah), Tijardović (The Split Aquarelle), Gounod (Faust), Rossini (The Barber of Seville, Guglielmo Tell), Lully (The Burgeois Gentleman), Bradić (Crux Dissimulata) and others on the stages in Croatia, Slovenia, England, United States and China. In China, Shanghai (for Verdi’s year 2000.) and Beijing (for opening of Beijing festival 2003.)I directed the world biggest opera production ever since, Aida, with 2800 participants on stage, and cast from eight countries in the theatre-stadium for 55.000 people.
Many of my opera works have been on the repertoire for several years, and some have been performed on the stages of Croatian national theatres more than a hundred times in almost 20 years. I have collaborated with many world-famous opera stars such as Željko Lučić, Lana Kos, Lando Bartolini, Bonaldo Giaotti, Kristian Johannsson, Li Peng Chang.... I am also into contemporary music, so occasionally I work on music shows such as Kagel, Detoni, Berio.
My production of Carmen with the students of the Academy of Music, the Academy of Dramatic Arts, the Academy of Fine Arts and the Faculty of Textile Technology was proclaimed one of the three major cultural events in 2011.
My Tartuffe production with students won 5 major awards in Croatia.
For my work I have received 25 awards as a director in Croatia and abroad. I have also won the Denis de Rougemont Youth Award by the European Festivals Association. I am also a multiple winner of awards by the Croatian Association of Dramatic Arts (HDDU), as well as the prestigious Tito Strozzi Award.
I have been awarded with five honours by the Republic of Croatia.
Besides theatre, I am also involved in writing scripts and directing for a variety of events, opening and closing ceremonies, sports events and occasionally big concerts. I have worked on more than 150 events in Zagreb, Croatia, and abroad as a script writer or director. I have directed in all major urban Croatian open and closed spaces. I was director of many first-time formal events that have since become regular.
The opening ceremony of the Asian Beach Games in Muscat, Oman, 2010., was broadcast live in all of Asia, which was staged by my crew of 107 people from Croatia, and another 400 from all over Asia.
On several occasions I took part in humanitarian events, concerts and spectacles, Festival of Equal Opportunities, Ana Rukavina Foundation, SUVAG Polyclinic events and UNICEF.
Currently I work as professor at the Acting Department of the Academy of Dramatic Arts where I teach acting in the second year at the MA graduate level. At this moment 13 of my drama and opera productions are on the repertoire in Croatia, which were performed more than 180 times only in the last season.
